The Guardians
Twenty-two stars. One walk.
Every culture that ever looked up kept returning to the same points of light. Not the faintest, not the prettiest: the ones that could not be missed, that rose on schedule, that told you when to plant and when to sail and when the dead were near. The record they left is the oldest continuous act of human attention we have.
Twenty-two of those stars stand at the fixed points of the story. The walk runs in order, Vega to Deneb, through five Passages. When one of them stood over your birth, everything ever said about it belongs to you.
The Passage of Gifts
What you were handed before you had any say in it. The call, the vow, the way, and the seed, carried whole and small from the very start, and bound for the dark before it can bloom.
IVega — the Weaver · α Lyrae
Parted from the one she loves by a river of stars she may cross once a year. She keeps weaving. To carry Vega is to be faithful across a distance you cannot close.
IIAlphecca — the Star Maid · α Coronae Borealis
The one bright jewel in a crown of stars, flung into the sky so a marriage would shine forever. To carry Alphecca is to wear love openly rather than hold it tight.
IIIArcturus — the Wayfinder · α Boötis
The star Polynesian voyagers steered by across open ocean, toward an island they could not yet see. To carry Arcturus is to know the way in your body before anything outside confirms it.
IVSpica — the Maker's Jewel · α Virginis
The grain in the Maiden's hand, the finished work that proves the patience. To carry Spica is to hold something ripe enough to be given away.
The Passage of the Bearing
Two stars at the top of the sky. One leads the mourners; one does not move at all. Between them you learn what you steer by.
VAlkaid — the Sky-Caribou · η Ursae Majoris
The last star in the Great Bear's tail, the leader of the mourners. To carry Alkaid is to keep walking while grieving, and to lead others while you do.
VIPolaris — the Still Child · α Ursae Minoris
The whole sky turns and this one star does not. To carry Polaris is to be the fixed thing others take their bearing from.
The Winter Passage
The longest stretch, and the descent. Eight guardians in the brightest, coldest quarter of the sky: the hunter, the twins, the herald, the great light, and at the end the one that shows you your own face.
VIICapella — the Nurturer · α Aurigae
The she-goat who suckled the infant Zeus, carried on the charioteer's shoulder. To carry Capella is to feed what will outgrow you.
VIIICastor & Pollux — the Hero Twins · α & β Geminorum
One brother immortal, one not. Rather than be parted, he gave half his immortality away. To carry the Twins is to refuse a gift that costs you the other.
IXProcyon — the Forerunner · α Canis Minoris
Rises before the Dog Star, announcing a light not yet visible. To carry Procyon is to go first, without proof, for something you can feel coming.
XSirius — the Great Illuminator · α Canis Majoris
The brightest star in the sky. Its dawn rising once told Egypt the Nile was about to flood. To carry Sirius is to be the signal a whole season waits on.
XIBetelgeuse & Rigel — the Hunter · α & β Orionis
Red fire on the shoulder, blue-white at the foot: the pursuit and the ground it stands on. To carry the Hunter is to want something badly enough to be shaped by the chase.
XIIAldebaran — Watcher of the East · α Tauri
The red eye of the Bull, Royal Watcher of the rising. To carry Aldebaran is to be present at the beginning of things and answerable for it.
XIIIThe Pleiades — the Seven Sisters · M45, Taurus
The one cluster every culture on earth named, and nearly all of them counted seven though six are easy to see. To carry the Pleiades is to belong to a gathering assembled for a purpose.
XIVAlgol — the Dark Mirror · β Persei
Every two days and twenty-one hours this star dims, and the ancients who called it the demon's head had no instrument that could explain why. To carry Algol is to meet the part of yourself you have been looking away from.
The Passage of Hearts
What you come back with, and who you owe it to. Two of the four Royal Watchers stand here, keeping the turning of the year.
XVCanopus — the Navigator · α Carinae
Second brightest star in the sky, the rudder of the ship, invisible from most of the north. To carry Canopus is to steer by something not everyone can see.
XVIGienah — the Crow · γ Corvi
The messenger who came back with the truth and was scorched black for it. To carry Gienah is to say the thing and pay for it.
XVIIRegulus — Watcher of the North · α Leonis
The heart of the Lion, the little king, Royal Watcher of the peak. To carry Regulus is to hold power at its height and be measured by how you spend it.
XVIIIAntares — Watcher of the West · α Scorpii
The rival of Mars, the red heart of the Scorpion, Royal Watcher of the setting. To carry Antares is to burn hardest at the hour things end.
The Passage of Wings
The handing forward. Two realms, the deep water, the devoted one, and the crossing that ends the walk where the next one begins. The last two Royal Watchers keep the deep.
XIXDeneb Algedi — Lord of Two Realms · δ Capricorni
The goat that is also a fish, at home on the mountain and in the water. To carry Deneb Algedi is to move between two worlds and be trusted in both.
XXFomalhaut — Watcher of the South · α Piscis Austrini
Alone in a wide empty stretch of sky, the mouth of the Southern Fish, Royal Watcher of the deep. To carry Fomalhaut is to receive what has been poured out and hold it without spilling.
XXIAltair — the Devoted · α Aquilae
The Cowherd on the far bank of the Silver River, waiting all year for one night. To carry Altair is to keep faith from the other side.
XXIIDeneb — the Cosmic Crossing · α Cygni
The tail of the Swan, laid along the Milky Way, marking where the river is crossed. To carry Deneb is to stand at the end of one walk and know it is the start of the next.
